ALBANY, N.Y. – Rep. Paul D. Tonko (NY-21) issued the following statement commemorating the tragic events of September 11, 2001.

“Today we take a moment to stop and remember those who lost their lives on 9/11,” said Rep. Paul Tonko.  “Whether it was a loved one, family friend, neighbor, or stranger, we honor and remember those who fell victim to this tragic attack.” 

“This anniversary we continue to bear witness to the awesome acts of selflessness and courage displayed by our state and nation’s first responders, both in this attack as well as each and everyday.  Their heroic efforts undoubtedly saved countless lives, and we are forever grateful.”

“As we pay tribute to the surviving families and friends of this sacred and somber day, we also reaffirm and recommit ourselves to what it truly means to be American: honoring justice, respecting freedom and demanding equality.”

“In light of these values, I was proud to cosponsor and vote in favor of the bipartisan Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, which recognizes 9/11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance.   This bill was originated by family members who lost their loved ones on 9/11.  It is an opportunity to salute these heroes and recapture the spirit of unity and compassion that inspired so many following the attacks, to rededicate ourselves to service to our community and our nation.”

“Our calling today is one of service to our community and to our country, to honor a legacy that still shines brightly, despite the darkness that surrounds those lives lost and the tragedy of eight years ago.  Just as America has done so many times, from the ashes and twisted steel of the World Trade Center to the scraps at the Pentagon and the rubble in Pennsylvania, she will continue to rise as a stronger democracy, dedicated to providing promise and opportunity for generations to come.”
