Appropriations Request

Unity House Emergency Shelter and Apartments for Victims of Domestic Violence

Amount Requested: $1,000,000

33 Second Street
Troy New York 12180

Project Recipient: Unity House of Troy, New York

This project will replace the existing 18 bed emergency shelter located in an old residence with a state of art 25 bed emergency shelter as well as create 12-15 safe, affordable apartments in the community.  Finding affordable, safe housing is a significant challenge in helping those that flee violent relationships. Additionally, the search is complicated when the abused has steady employment and or their children are in school. Stays in the shelter can be shortened when appropriate housing can be secured. Currently Unity House serves as a broker looking to identify apartments and negotiate lease arrangements in a very competitive leasing market. This project will provide development of 12-15 units of safe, affordable apartment units for victims of domestic violence and their families who are ready to leave shelter.
