Rep. Tonko Tours Richmond, VA Public Water System

Capital Region Congressman continues to shine spotlight on America’s drinking water systems

“Our public water systems are critical to the lives of millions of Americans in communities throughout the nation. Every single job and every life depends on access to safe, clean drinking water, but across the U.S. many of these systems are failing today. From Flint to Hoosick Falls, we are already seeing the price of inaction. In Richmond, we can see the opportunities that come with confronting this issue head-on." - Rep. Paul Tonko

TonkoRichmondWaterRICHMOND, VAU.S. Representative Paul Tonko (NY-20) made another stop on his U.S. Water Systems Tour this morning with a visit to a new water treatment plant in Richmond, Virginia. He was joined on the tour by Congressman A. Donald McEachin (VA-04) and Richmond Public Utilities Director Bob Steidel along with representatives for U.S. Senator Mark Warner and Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney.

Congressman Paul D. Tonko (NY-20):

“Our public water systems are critical to the lives of millions of Americans in communities throughout the nation. Every single job and every life depends on access to safe, clean drinking water, but across the U.S. many of these systems are failing today. From Flint to Hoosick Falls, we are already seeing the price of inaction. In Richmond, we can see the opportunities that come with confronting this issue head-on. I want to thank Mayor Stoney, Congressman McEachin and Senator Warner for hosting me for this visit and for their help in highlighting our nation’s water needs, a major service provided by the government that too often goes unfulfilled.”

Congressman A. Donald McEachin (VA-04):

"The quality of our drinking water is critical to our everyday lives. I'm proud that Richmond can serve as an example for our country."

Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney:

"I am pleased Congressman Tonko took the time to compare and contrast by visiting a successful water treatment facility like ours here in Richmond, of which we are very proud."

The Richmond water system is the third stop on Rep. Tonko’s national water tour and follows recent visits to water processing facilities in Wilmington, DE and Baltimore, MD. He launched his U.S. Water Systems Tour earlier this year to raise awareness about the need for investment in America’s struggling public water systems and his AQUA Act that would deliver critical funds to address them.

Rep. Tonko has previously visited drinking water systems in Schenectady, Delanson, Altamont, Albany and others. He met with the Mayor of Troy, NY in early 2016 to discuss the city’s major water main break.
