Dear Friends,
In previous sessions of Congress, I’ve been excited to return to our district for the long work period to meet with residents in our Capital Region and inform my constituents about the work we’ve done to enact legislation that meaningfully delivers for the American people. Unfortunately, that is not case for this session of Congress.
During these final weeks in September, the House should be in Washington doing what our constituents elected us to do — legislating. Instead, Speaker Mike Johnson abruptly cut short the final weeks of session before the November elections, declaring that “the House has done its work.” I ask, what work is that? This Republican-controlled Congress has been the least productive in modern history, with Speaker Johnson canceling more than 60 days of voting. No other job would tolerate more than 2 months of not showing up work with no excuse.
With prices skyrocketing on everything from gas and groceries to housing and health care, people are depending on Congress to address the cost-of-living crisis. But instead, what Americans are getting from Republican leadership and the White House is incompetent inaction at best — and blatant corruption at worst.
Take the recent news from the White House this Tuesday, when Vice President JD Vance announced the removal of hundreds of thousands of people from Affordable Care Act plans — claiming fraud while failing to produce any data proving these enrollees don’t qualify. This administration is going further than ever to rip away access to health care for families, even after their Big Ugly Bill slashed Medicare by $1 trillion. All the while, the self-dealing of Trump and his family continues to reach absurd new heights, as Donald Trump Jr. gets his lavish wedding on a private island bankrolled by a Russian oligarch, while his personal wealth has increased by more than $250 million since his father’s reelection.
This corruption must end. We cannot tolerate an administration that steals from the poor and gives to the rich. Congress needs to step up to fight for a government that works the way it should — not for wealth and special interests, but for the American people. That’s the action that I’m fighting to deliver. This week, I held a press conference to outline the priorities I’m pushing for responding to the many challenges working families are facing and deliver real, tangible solutions for our communities. That effort includes addressing:
- Health care: We must act immediately to undo the irreparable harm caused by Trump’s Big Ugly Bill by undoing Medicaid cuts and restoring the ACA tax credits. I’m also pushing to deliver comprehensive health care to every American, which is why I support the Medicare for All Act to expand coverage with no premiums, deductibles, or co-pays for any American family.
- Energy: With utility bills soaring, I introduced a slate of energy affordability bills that will help lower Americans’ skyrocketing energy costs and provide the relief that households so desperately need.
- Immigration: On top of my push to abolish ICE, I’m proud to serve as cosponsor of the Protecting Sensitive Locations Act, which would prohibit immigration enforcement actions at schools, hospitals, and places of worship. We need to fix our long-broken immigration system and ensure that immigrants who are simply trying to make a life, get an education, and contribute to our communities have the means to do so legally and without living in fear of being snatched off the street.
- Corruption: I support an amendment to the Constitution which would ensure that the President is not granted immunity from criminal prosecution. Furthermore, my Democratic colleagues and I have pledged to use our full oversight and subpoena power when we next control Congress to investigate this administration’s self-enrichment, self-dealing, and pay-to-play schemes that are a scourge on our democracy and society.
Whatever the results in November, when we return to Washington, Congress must be armed with a plan of action to meaningfully respond to this cost-of-living crisis and to deliver for the American people. Our communities deserve nothing less.
As always, thank you for reading
