Tonko Statement in Observance 15th Anniversary of September 11 Attacks

Washington, September 9, 2016 | Sean Magers (202-225-5076)

Congressman Tonko released the following statement in observance of the 15th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Last year, Tonko helped pass the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Reauthorization Act, which permanently extended the Victim Compensation Fund and World Trade Center Health Program, which provides health care to 9/11 responders and survivors in all 50 states.

“The events of September 11 affected every life in every corner of this nation. In the face of violence and terror, we saw New York first responders run toward collapsing towers to save their fellow Americans. On the 15th anniversary of this terrible day, let us remember the actions of those who risked and gave their lives for the safety of others. Their spirit lives on and continues to inspire us all,” Tonko said.

New York State is home to 80% of 9/11 first responders and survivors. Approximately 190 residents of New York’s 20th Congressional District participate in the World Trade Center Health Program.
