Tonko Statement on House Vote to Advance Trumpcare

"This bill would mean women who are pregnant and children with asthma can be priced out of coverage due to preexisting conditions. It means seniors will pay five times more in premiums under a crushing age tax. It means 24 million Americans will lose coverage. And it steals from Medicare and Medicaid, all to give a massive tax break to millionaires and special interests. We are a better, greater nation than this."

WASHINGTON – U.S. Representative Paul Tonko issued the following statement today following the close, party line 217-213 vote in the House of Representatives to advance the Republican TrumpCare bill:

“Earlier today, the House of Representatives passed Trumpcare. The bill was changed in the dead of night with little debate. Health experts from the American Cancer Society to AARP to our nation’s hospitals oppose the bill. H.R. 1628 means higher costs for families, increases in premiums, deductibles and out-of-pocket costs.

“This bill would mean women who are pregnant and children with asthma can be priced out of coverage due to preexisting conditions. It means seniors will pay five times more in premiums under a crushing age tax. It means 24 million Americans will lose coverage. And it steals from Medicare and Medicaid, all to give a massive tax break to millionaires and special interests. We are a better, greater nation than this.

“I can only hope Republicans come to their senses and stop this disaster in the U.S. Senate. I encourage everyone to keep up the calls, emails, tweets, posts, letters, etc. The fight to protect our care is not over.”
