Congressman Tonko has long made it a top priority to ensure that all Americans have access to safe, clean drinking water. Throughout his time in Congress, the Congressman has pushed for federal funding for communities to upgrade their water systems, delivering improved water quality in municipalities here in the Capital Region and across the nation. 


Grassroots Rural and Small Community Water Systems Assistance Act

A bill to amend the Safe Drinking Water Act to reauthorize the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) program that aids small town water programs in meeting national primary drinking water standards. The reauthorization lasted until Fiscal Year 2020.

Assistance, Quality, and Affordability (AQUA) Act of 2016

A bill to update the Safe Drinking Water Act by increasing the authorized level of funding for local communities struggling to meet federal drinking water standards. This bill was the first major update to the Safe Drinking Water Act in twenty years.

Assistance, Quality, and Affordability (AQUA) Act of 2017

A bill to reform the Safe Drinking Water Act to expand how many drinking water systems are subject to the act’s regulations. The legislation also increases funding for the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund, which distributes investments used to improve subpar drinking water systems across the country.

Assistance, Quality, and Affordability (AQUA) Act of 2021

A bill to deliver needed federal investments to local communities to address critical drinking water infrastructure needs and replace millions of lead water service lines. This funding was reauthorized in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
