U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand’s office, joined by Congressman Paul Tonko, and Attorney General Andrew Cuomo’s office, will host a Senior Fraud Workshop TUESDAY, JANUARY 5. The program, which will include members from the AARP, Social Security Administration, Albany Law School and the Schenectady County Office of Senior and Long Term Care, is free and open to the public.
In September, Senator Gillibrand, a member of the Special Committee on Aging, released a report estimating that in the Capital Region, approximately 30,000 seniors have been hit by consumer fraud – losing more than $11 million. In response to the alarming report, Senator Gillibrand is pursuing a full crack down on fraud against seniors, including:
- Increased penalties for people who commit fraud against seniors;
- New measures to protect social security and veterans benefits from debt collectors;
- Broad efforts to stop abusive mail, telemarketing and internet fraud against seniors; and
- A national grant program for states to protect seniors from misleading financial advisors claiming to specialize in seniors.
Senator Gillibrand’s Senior Fraud Workshop in Schenectady will consist of sections on financial management and senior fraud, led by a panel of experts who will help seniors gain a basic understanding of financial literacy, recognize risk factors for financial exploitation and learn about who can help them if they are exploited. The program, co-hosted by the New York State Attorney General’s Office, is free and open to the public.
