Congressman Paul Tonko today applauded three semifinalists of the Intel Science Talent Search 2010 from the Capital Region. Intel STS, a program of Society for Science & the Public, is America’s most prestigious science competition for high school seniors and alumni of the program over its 69 years include Nobel Laureates and two Fields Medalists.
This year, 300 semifinalists were selected from more than 1,700 students who entered the competition. Each semifinalist and each of their schools have been awarded $1,000 in recognition of this achievement. The semifinalists from the Capital Region are Prateek Baghel of Albany, Arunima Balan of Niskayuna, and Cassie Lin of Schenectady.
“I want to extend heart-felt congratulations to Prateek, Arunima and Cassie,” said Rep. Tonko. “These young adults represent the bright stars of the future of our country, a future which will be built upon an innovation economy driven by clean energy jobs and innovative spirits. We need to continue to cull this type of talent to ensure that future generations are given all the tools and investments necessary to succeed.”
Prateek, Arunima, and Cassie are now eligible to be selected as one of 40 Intel STS Finalists. An announcement of the talented high schools seniors to win this distinction will be made on Wednesday, January 27. The 40 Finalists will travel to Washington, D.C. in March to compete for prizes, including the top award of $100,000.
