Congressman Paul Tonko announced today that the Richmondville Volunteer Fire Department in Schoharie County and the Town of Glen Volunteer Fire Department in Montgomery County have each received federal grants as part of round 6 of the Fiscal Year 2009 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program, administered by the Department of Homeland Security.
The Richmondville Volunteer Fire Department’s grant totals $50,232, while the Town of Glen Volunteer Fire Company will receive $23,180. The grants will be used for improvements in operations and safety at both departments.
“These grants are important for our local departments to maintain the quality of service they provide,” said Congressman Tonko. “The funding takes on added importance when you consider that departments are struggling with budget issues as the economy recovers from the difficult and deep recession. These grants will ensure that those who put their own lives on the line to protect us will have the resources and training necessary to serve their communities.”
The AFG program is part of a larger, coordinated effort to strengthen the Nation’s overall level of preparedness and ability to respond to fire and related hazards. It provides assistance to local fire departments and emergency medical services organizations through a competitive grant process to enhance their ability to protect the health and safety of the public. It helps departments obtain much needed emergency response equipment, personal protective gear, firefighting and emergency vehicles, and training.
