A year after Schoharie County truck driver Jason Rivenburg was senselessly murdered at an abandoned South Carolina gas station, Congressman Paul Tonko and Jason’s wife Hope Rivenburg will hold a news conference at the Capitol in Washington on Tuesday, March 16th, to discuss Jason’s Law and detail efforts to secure support in Congress. Just this month, Hope started personally lobbying Members of Congress on Capitol Hill.

Jason Rivenburg was murdered during a robbery attempt last March at an abandoned gas station in South Carolina. Jason, a long haul trucker, has stopped to rest in compliance with federal regulations that require truckers to rest after 11 hours of driving. The case called attention to the nationwide shortage of safe, accessible rest stops for truckers, and led Congressman Tonko to introduce H.R. 2156, better known as Jason’s Law. The bill would create a grant program that would help alleviate the shortage and help pay for expansion and safety improvements at existing rest areas.

Jason’s Law has garnered bipartisan support. Congressman Tonko and Hope Rivenburg will be joined by Congressman Erik Paulsen (R-MN), who is a co-sponsor of the bill. Sen. Charles Schumer has introduced a companion bill (S. 971) in the U.S. Senate.

WHAT: Congressman Paul Tonko, Congressman Erik Paulsen and Hope Rivenburg hold news conference to discuss Jason’s Law.

WHEN: Tuesday, March 16th, 1:30pm

WHERE: Rm. H-122, The Capitol, Washington, D.C.
