Congressman Paul Tonko announced today that fire departments in the City of Troy and the Town of Florida in Montgomery County will receive grants totaling $306,647 as part of round 11 of the FY2009 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program through the Department of Homeland Security.
The City of Troy Fire Department is receiving $286,697, while the Town of Florida Volunteer Fire Department will receive $19,950. These grants will be used to improve operations and safety.
“These grants are important to our local fire departments to maintain the quality of the services they so heroically provide that protect lives and property,” said Congressman Tonko. “We need to make sure, especially in these tough economic times, that our firefighters have the resources they need to keep our communities safe.”
The AFG program is part of a larger, coordinated effort to strengthen the Nation’s overall level of preparedness and ability to respond to fire and related hazards. It provides assistance to local fire departments and emergency medical services organizations through a competitive grant process to enhance their ability to protect the health and safety of the public. It helps departments obtain much needed emergency response equipment, personal protective gear, firefighting and emergency vehicles, and training.
