Congressman Paul Tonko is urging Capital Region residents to take advantage of the new HealthCare.gov website, a clear and easy to understand resource that is designed to help individuals and small businesses navigate the complicated and confusing process of shopping for health insurance. The creation of the website was part of the new health care reform legislation, and is designed as an easy-to-use tool that will provide consumers will information on both public and private health care options.

“One of the reasons I voted for this health care reform legislation was because it would put consumers back in charge of their health care – and this new site is the first step towards fulfilling that promise,” said Congressman Tonko. “Whether you are a family that has lost your insurance, a recent college graduate, or someone with a pre-existing condition – this website will spell out very clearly what your options are. Everyone should take advantage of this new tool to learn how they will benefit from the new health care reform law.”

HealthCare.gov is a first of its kind website that empowers consumers and the marketplace. Just by answering a few background questions, consumers will get a list of public and private insurance options, details of plans, and contact information for each company. Starting in October, the site will provide price estimates for different health insurance plans.

The site also includes a timeline for implementation of the various provisions of the new law, state-by-state information for individuals with pre-existing conditions, and provides links to help consumers find quality rankings for health care providers.

“Through this new, innovative tool, Capital Region residents will discover that health reform is about providing affordable, accessible, care,” added Congressman Tonko. “This site promotes transparency and competition, and allows consumers to make informed decisions about their health care.”
