Congressman Paul Tonko made the following statement today after passage of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act. The legislation will provide long-term, comprehensive health care and compensation for first responders and others exposed to dangerous toxins at Ground Zero following the 9/11 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center:
“I commend Congresswoman Maloney, Congressman Nadler, Congressman King and the entire New York Delegation for coming together in a bi-partisan manner to aid those who worked at Ground Zero in the wake of the 9/11 attacks.
“Thousands of first responders, construction and cleanup crews, and other exposed to toxins at ground zero are now sick and need our help. It’s estimated that over 31,000 World Trade Center responders have received some form of medical treatment in the past five years.
“As a member of the New York State Assembly, I traveled with my colleagues to Ground Zero just days after the attacks. I can still clearly recall the pain and anguish that surrounded the site, and I can still see the determination in the eyes of the workers. I remember their courage, bravery, and resilience.
“When our nation called for their help, our first responders were there. They didn't ask questions or think about themselves, they sacrificed their health, safety and lives to save others. Now, as they deal with the medical repercussions from these heroic acts - both mental and physical - the least we can do is ensure they receive adequate treatment for their inflictions. No matter what our measure is today, it pales in comparison to their heroism on that day. For that, we are forever grateful.”
