Congressman Paul Tonko will join U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (tentative), Congressman Scott Murphy, former Congressman Michael McNulty and other local leaders, family and friends on Monday, October 11, at 10am to rededicate the Lansingburgh Post Office in honor of Martin G. “Marty” Mahar.
Mr. Mahar was a lifelong Troy resident who served in World War II and spent nearly 30 years as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. He was a respected community leader who served as Mayor of Troy from 1990-1991, and as a member of the Troy City Council for 10 years. He passed away in 2007.
Earlier this year, Congressman Tonko penned legislation which passed the House to rename the Post Office in Mr. Mahar’s honor. Companion legislation sponsored by Sen. Gillibrand and Sen. Charles Schumer passed the U.S. Senate and was signed into law by President Obama.
