Congressman Paul Tonko today toured BullEx of Albany, the latest in a series of visits he has made to local businesses to discuss efforts in the House of Representatives to boost manufacturing in America and create and retain new jobs for the middle class. Congressman Tonko is working with colleagues in the House on a legislative agenda called “Make it in America,” which will help American manufacturers through tax credits, new incentives for job creation in clean energy, and other measures.
“Growing our economy starts with reversing the job declines we’ve experienced in manufacturing over the past decade,” said Congressman Tonko. “We are working in the House to help companies like BullEx compete in a global economy and create the high-skill, high-wage jobs of the future right here at home.”
“We thank Congressman Tonko for taking the time to tour our facility and for his work in Washington to help boost manufacturing,” said Ryan O’Donnell, CEO of BullEx. “Manufacturing and exporting products around the world helps bring money back into our economy here at home, and helps create and protect jobs for American workers. We support efforts that will help improve competitiveness for American manufacturers.”
During the past decade, 4.6 million American manufacturing jobs have been lost, 1/3 of the total manufacturing jobs in the U.S. As a result, Congressman Tonko has joined efforts in the House to increase manufacturing, help create new jobs, and promote American competitiveness, innovation and exports. This strategy includes:
• Providing tax credits to help businesses hire new employees and sell their products and innovation overseas
• Boosting incentives to create American clean energy jobs
• Demanding that other countries honor fair trade principles
• Strengthening partnerships with businesses to retrain America’s workers for jobs of the future
Several bills to assist manufacturers have passed the House and have been signed into law by President Obama in recent months. They include the National Manufacturing Strategy Act, which directs the president to work with industry and state leaders to construct a strategy every four years that will boost manufacturing. Other new laws include the U.S. Manufacturing Enhancement Act, which makes it cheaper for American companies to obtain the materials they need to manufacture goods, and the Small Business Jobs Act, which provides tax cuts and unleashes $300 billion in private sector lending for small businesses.
Congressman Tonko has also introduced the Small Business Innovation to Job Creation Act, which would create a grant program that would help small high technology businesses bring innovations developed through research to manufacturing and lead to new jobs.
