Congressman Paul Tonko made the following statement today after passage of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act. The legislation will provide long-term, comprehensive health care and compensation for first responders and others exposed to dangerous toxins at Ground Zero following the 9/11 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center. The bill is now headed to the President for his signature.
“Following this tragic attack on America, America has now compassionately responded to her heroes. I commend Congresswoman Maloney, Congressman Nadler, Congressman King and the entire New York Delegation for coming together in a bi-partisan manner to aid those who worked at Ground Zero in the wake of the 9/11 attacks.
“This legislation will save lives by providing assistance to more than 30,000 first responders and others exposed to toxins at ground zero. When our nation called for help, our first responders were there. They didn't ask questions or think about themselves, they sacrificed their health, safety and lives to save others. Now, as they deal with the medical repercussions from these heroic acts - both mental and physical - the least we can do is ensure they receive adequate treatment for their inflictions. While it has taken too long to get to this point, this legislation will finally provide desperately needed assistance.”
