Congressman Paul Tonko announced today that the federal government has awarded a grant of $92,625 to Niskayuna Fire District 2 through the Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) Program. The grant will help the department improve safety for their first responders and enhance emergency services to residents.

“This Assistance to Firefighters Grant will be put to immediate use in the 21st Congressional District, helping Niskayuna Fire District 2 improve emergency services for our residents and keep our first responders safe,” said Congressman Tonko. “In the midst of widening budget gaps at the local level, these funds are particularly crucial. These men and women risk their lives every day to keep us safe and deserve the best possible resources and equipment to make their jobs easier. Congratulations and continued thanks to the Niskayuna Fire Company for their noble efforts.”

Here are the details on the award:

  • Niskayuna Fire District 2: $92,625, to purchase 24 new firefighter friendly air packs.  The new set of air packs are up-to-date, lighter, and more compatible with those used by neighboring departments.

The Assistance to Firefighters Grants program was created in 2001 to help firefighters and emergency medical organizations purchase critically needed equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training and other resources necessary to protect the public and first responders.  It is administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Department of Homeland Security. The program requires that each department provide a match of between 5% to 10% of the total project cost.
