Congressman Paul Tonko today issued the following statement on the 46th anniversary of Medicare. President Lyndon Johnson signed Medicare into law on July 30, 1965:

“I join with all Americans to celebrate the success of Medicare in providing affordable, quality care for our seniors,” said Congressman Paul Tonko. “Before Medicare, nearly half of our seniors over 65 did without health coverage, and now coverage is universal. Medicare has played an enormous role in dramatically reducing the poverty rate among seniors, and has significantly extended the life expectancy of Capital Region residents and all Americans. Creating Medicare was a great achievement for the Democratic Party, and I remain committed to strengthening Medicare and fighting Republican efforts to destroy this program.”
