WASHINGTONCongressman Paul D. Tonko cheered news today that the U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded Albany International Airport $1,342,171 to upgrade its snow removal equipment for the coming winter. This grant follows $2,237,671 recently awarded to the airport to reconstruct runway and taxiway lighting. The combined $3.5 million in federally funded improvements will help to keep constituents and other travelers safe, while helping to prevent flight delays and cancellations.

“These improvements will help Albany’s world-class airport ensure visitors and residents alike can come and go safely, even in winter.” Tonko noted. “Improving one of our region’s premiere transportation hubs will deliver both short and long-term economic benefits to our Capital Region, encouraging tourism, business activity, and commercial development. I am pleased that the Department of Transportation has expressed the value and importance of our Albany International Airport with this financial investment by the American people for our region.”

Between 2013 and 2018, passengers at Albany International Airport increased by 20 percent, making it the fastest-growing upstate New York airport over the past five years. In 2018, Albany International Airport welcomed a total of 1,449,540 passengers.
