Tonko Statement on Resignation of EPA Air Chief Bill Wehrum

WASHINGTON – Paul D. Tonko, Chairman of the Energy & Commerce Subcommittee on Environment & Climate Change, issued the following statement today upon learning that Bill Wehrum, Assistant Administrator for the Office of Air and Radiation at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, has resigned:

“Whether Bill Wehrum was helping his former UARG clients weaken Clean Air Act standards, rolling back fuel efficiency in our nation’s cars and trucks, or propping up dirty power to benefit wealthy campaign donors, his decisions at EPA consistently ignored science and put special interests ahead of the American people. It’s difficult to find anything that Mr. Wehrum did as Assistant Administrator for the Office of Air and Radiation that made our air cleaner or safer, and I fear our nation will continue to pay the price for his actions for many years to come. I urge President Trump to nominate a replacement who will faithfully execute the laws as written by Congress and protect public health instead of special interests.”
