CONGRESSMAN TONKO WORKING TO GET LOCAL COUNTIES THEIR FULL SHARE OF DISASTER AID

Congressman Paul Tonko released the following statement regarding his efforts to get all local counties devastated by Hurricane Irene added to FEMA’s Disaster Declaration for full Individual and Public Assistance:

“Over the past several days I have engaged in conversations with Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate, Governor Andrew Cuomo, and local governments. Together, we are working to ensure that accurate data is collected and presented to FEMA regarding our local counties – which will enable the federal government to respond in full force to this catastrophic storm.

“Currently, Albany, Montgomery, Rensselaer and Schoharie Counties are eligible for Public Assistance, which helps with debris removal, emergency protective actions and the repair or replacement of disaster-damaged facilities. Qualifying thus far for Individual Assistance are Albany, Schenectady, Schoharie, and just today, Rensselaer Counties.  This enables help to go to individuals and households. While I am heartened by these recent additions, there is still additional need out there, which I have seen firsthand.

“I am calling on FEMA to declare Montgomery and Saratoga Counties as eligible for Individual Assistance, and Schenectady County eligible for Public Assistance.

“Since the storm has passed, I have witnessed absolute destruction and devastation through my tours of the 21st Congressional District. However, I have also seen the spirit of community, as neighbors help neighbors, first responders put their lives on the line to save others and our collective spirit of resilience and strength is as strong as ever.

“I will continue to push hard on behalf of my constituents to make certain all of our voices are heard and that we receive the necessary federal resources to recover and rebuild from this catastrophic storm.”
