Tonko Heralds $3.6 Million in Federal Transportation Awards to Capital Region

Grants will fund improvements at Albany International Airport, state-wide highway safety

ALBANY—Congressman Paul D. Tonko announced today that the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) and Albany International Airport have been awarded a combined $3,638,140.00 in grants from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT).

“Quality, effective transportation infrastructure is a vital part of the work we do growing our economy, creating job opportunities and improving life in our communities,” Congressman Tonko said. “These federal investments in our local transportation systems will help make them safer, more accessible and more efficient, all good things when it comes to strengthening our Capital Region. Congratulations to the team at the Albany International Airport and the New York State Department of Transportation for their important work ensuring our roads, bridges, airports and waterways continue to improve and thrive.”

  • Albany International Airport has been awarded $1,638,140 to be used to improve airport drainage. The project will fund the installation of 1,580 feet of drainage improvements needed to sufficiently handle storm water runoff.
  • The NYSDOT has been awarded $2,000,000 to reduce crashes, particularly in work zone areas. The program aims to decrease aggressive driving from both passenger and Commercial Motor Vehicle drivers.

The DOT helps fund federal programs on public transit, highways and highways safety, aviation, intercity rail, maritime safety, pipelines and more. The agency was the source of approximately $86.2 billion for programs around the U.S. in FY2018.
