The Science Coalition award honors congressman for work elevating fundamental scientific research & investment

WASHINGTON—Congressman Paul D. Tonko was recognized today as a 2020 Champion of Science by The Science Coalition (TSC), a prestigious distinction that honors a small group of Congressional leaders each year whose actions and votes consistently reflect a commitment to fundamental science through funding investment for federal research agencies.

“As an engineer, I have always had a deep respect for science,” said Congressman Tonko. “When we embrace science and truth, we begin to realize the vast potential of our great nation to lead the world in advancements in technology that open our eyes even as they boost our economy, create good jobs and better the lives of countless in our Capital Region and beyond. My humble thanks to The Science Coalition for this distinction and for their unwavering support and investment in the cause of American innovation. I will always work for the advancement of science and seek opportunities for it to drive better policy making for the American people.”

“Congressman Paul Tonko is a tireless advocate for America’s scientific enterprise and for robust, predictable federal investment in fundamental science research,” said Lauren Brookmeyer, President of The Science Coalition. “His leadership and unwavering support of funding for the nation’s research universities and key federal research agencies advance our nation’s ability to stay competitive globally and drive the next generation of life-changing discoveries.”

Tonko is one of nine Members of Congress recognized this year, including Senators Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) and Maria Cantwell (D-WA) and Representatives Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR), Susan Davis (D-CA), James Langevin (D-RI), Dave Loebsack (D-IA), Steve Stivers (R-OH) and Greg Walden (R-OR).

The Science Coalition is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization of more than 50 of the nation’s leading public and private research institutions dedicated to highlighting the partnerships between the federal government and America’s research universities.

Since 1999, more than 100 members of Congress have been recognized with the Champion of Science Award for their efforts to secure federal funding for fundamental scientific research – through their voting records, bill sponsorships, letters of support, or other activities aimed at boosting scientific discovery. Awardees are selected both for their support of research institutions and their tireless efforts to ensure fundamental scientific advancement across all disciplines.
