Tonko Announces $50K Award for SUNY Polytechnic Institute

NSF grant will fund project to research energy-efficient alternatives for metal additive manufacture

AMSTERDAM, NY—Congressman Paul D. Tonko announced today that SUNY Polytechnic Institute has won a competitive $50,000 research grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The award, spearheaded by Dr. Gregory Denbeaux, will fund research on metal additive manufacturing to engineer a more energy-efficient, waste reducing process for developing biomedical and aerospace devices.

“Scientists and engineers here in our Capital Region continue to drive scientific and technological achievement for our nation, helping push the horizon of our understanding and propel American innovation with their extraordinary advances,” Congressman Tonko said. “This project, like so many others from SUNY Polytechnic, demonstrates the incredible vision and dedication of our local researchers and reaffirms our region’s eminence in STEM education. Congratulations to all involved in bringing this project to fruition! My thanks to the National Science Foundation for its continued support of science and discovery throughout our region and nation.”

The NSF was established by Congress in 1950 as an independent federal agency and works to develop cutting edge technologies in physics, mathematics, cybersecurity, neuroscience, and STEM education. Currently, NSF is responsible for funding 25 percent of all federally backed research at national colleges and universities.
