Tonko Cheers $1.33 Million for Schenectady Community Action Program

HHS award will support local child care programs and partnerships

AMSTERDAM, NY—Congressman Paul D. Tonko announced today that Schenectady Community Action Program (SCAP) will receive a federal grant award of $1,336,201 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to support SCAP’s child care partnerships for infants and toddlers.

“With the health and financial hardships of COVID-19 still battering our nation, we must do all we can to ensure our local child care services can continue to operate in support of Capital Region families and communities,” Congressman Tonko said. “SCAP early learning programs are priceless educational resources that have long served a foundational role for children and families here, providing a positive environment for childhood development and critical support services that many families truly need. This timely federal investment will help ensure that SCAP’s most essential services and partnerships can continue to strengthen our communities and safeguard a brighter future for our children.”

“EHS-CCP funds offer a unique opportunity to leverage multiple funding sources to expand access to high quality child care and comprehensive supports for low-income families,” said Addy Haberbush, Director of Early Learning Programs for Schenectady Community Action Program. “Not only do these funds enhance the capacity of SCAP’s child care partners, they are more important than ever because they are helping programs to sustain operations during this very difficult time.”

This funding goes towards SCAP’s Early Head Start-Child Care Partnerships (EHS-CCP) program. SCAP partners with local child care centers and programs to provide quality care for infants and toddlers from low-income families. These programs promote the physical, social, emotional, cognitive and language development of young children and families. EHS-CCP partners include Andrea Adrian’s Daycare, Heaven’s Little Blessings Daycare and Life’s Little Treasures Family Childcare, YWCA of NENY and Albany Community Action Partnership.
