Tonko Announces $397K Science Grant to Rensselaer

NSF award to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute funds research on technology, innovation

AMSTERDAM, NY—Congressman Paul D. Tonko cheered a grant awarded to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute by the National Science Foundation (NSF) totaling $397,537 for research on how to strengthen and improve carbon-fiber reinforced composites, which are used aerospace, defense, energy and automotive industries. The project is led by Dr. Nikhil Koratkar, Professor of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Nuclear Engineering at Rensselaer.

“The pioneering achievements of our Capital Region researchers and professors have helped advance countless STEM fields and continues to shape future scientists, engineers and visionaries by giving these local students opportunities to make meaningful contributions in their fields,” Congressman Tonko said. “The incredible research being done at colleges and universities right here in our own communities is among the most innovative in the nation and continues to break new ground in scientific discovery. My congratulations to all whose efforts brought this project to fruition and for their well-deserved award. Thank you for your continued work that helps to drive our region—and our nation—forward.”

“This fundamental research has the ability to greatly benefit the aerospace, defense, automotive, and energy industries—including the emerging wind energy sector,” said Dr. Koratkar. “We are grateful for the National Science Foundation's support in this important area of exploration.”

The NSF was established by Congress in 1950 as an independent federal agency and works to develop cutting edge technologies in physics, mathematics, cybersecurity, neuroscience, and STEM education. Currently, NSF is responsible for funding 25 percent of all federally backed research at national colleges and universities.
