Tonko Announces $224K Award to Support Local Innovator in Virtual Addiction Treatment

Grant funds local company for cutting-edge development of virtual opioid addiction treatment service

AMSTERDAM, NY—Congressman Paul D. Tonko announced today that Kaden Health is being awarded a Small Business Innovation Research grant totaling $224,394 to help improve virtual opioid addiction programs. This “SBIR Phase I” award is intended “to establish the technical merit, feasibility, and commercial potential” for the company’s proposal, and will be administered through the National Science Foundation Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program.

“The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has taken a heavy toll especially for those among us who have lost access to critical health services including mental health support and addiction treatment,” Congressman Tonko said. “Now, more than ever, our family, friends and neighbors struggling with the disease of addiction need our support. Creating and maintaining safe, effective and most importantly accessible treatment programs has the potential to save countless lives. My heartfelt congratulations to the team of visionaries at Kaden Health who are working to advance this vital project. We have a long road ahead to ensure those battling substance use disorder have the support they need to find and follow the path to recovery.”

“All of us at Kaden are pleased to be working with the NSF on research that helps people reclaim their lives through the use of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning suites of tools,” said Matt Bemis, Head of Technology at Kaden Health. “We're constantly enhancing treatment programs to help people who are struggling with addiction -- which is especially difficult during COVID-19.  Kaden is a leader in breaking through traditional and staid modes of operating by innovating and employing disruptive technologies to push the healthcare industry forward.”

Rep. Tonko has long worked to expand access, affordability and quality of available addiction treatment. Last year, Tonko introduced the Mainstreaming Addiction Treatment Act, legislation that would remove an outdated law that restricts health providers from prescribing buprenorphine, a proven treatment that has helped countless Americans suffering with a substance use disorder. Recently, he voted with the House to pass the COVID-19 rescue plan, the Heroes Act, which includes his Medicaid Reentry Act, a measure that allows states to activate Medicaid coverage for individuals transitioning out of incarceration 30 days prior to release, improving transitions to community care for those struggling with mental health and substance use disorder.

Kaden Health is a data-driven digital behavioral health services company dedicated to solving the greatest healthcare challenges of our time with ground-breaking technology, access to a quality curated provider network, and unwavering humanity. Kaden’s first product tackles the opioid addiction crisis by positively influencing human behavior and making advanced technologies and proven treatments accessible to all so that no one has to fight opioid or any addiction alone.
