Tonko Announces $34K COVID-19 Funding for Troy Fire Department

Funds will go to purchase of needed protective equipment and other resources for local firefighters

AMSTERDAM, NY—Congressman Paul D. Tonko announced today that Troy Fire Department is being awarded $34,374.55 for personal protective equipment (PPE) and other supplies as part of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) COVID-19 Supplemental. Tonko pushed for this award and sent a letter of support requesting consideration for the department.

“Our local firefighters put their lives on the line every day to protect our families, businesses and communities, and we owe it to them to make sure they have the tools and resources they need to do their jobs safely,” Congressman Tonko said. “Supporting these brave first responders has never been more critical, which is why I am so pleased to be able to announce this award, and why I pushed so hard to advance the Heroes Act, our COVID-19 rescue plan that rises to the challenge of this pandemic for our frontline workers, families, communities and our economy. As our heroic firefighters continue to protect and serve our community, I will not stop fighting to make sure that they have the resources they need.”

“Thanks to Congressman Tonko and his dedicated staff, the firefighters of Troy will be better protected in the battle against this disease,” said Troy Fire Chief Eric McMahon. “The personal protective equipment funded by this award is still very much needed.”

This is Round 11 of the competitive FY 2020 AFG-S announcements. Under the CARES Act, advanced by Congress in March, FEMA is providing $100 million in supplemental funding for personal protective equipment, or PPE, and related supplies to the fire service community to prevent, prepare for, and respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.
