Tonko Announces $2.6M Local Awards for Local Criminal Justice Science

Federal grants will fund forensics research and development in criminal justice programs across Capital Region

AMSTERDAM, NY—Congressman Paul D. Tonko announced today three grants being administered to the Capital Region totaling $2,665,549 to fund criminal justice projects researching forensic science and DNA analysis. The awards are being administered by the Department of Justice (DOJ) Office of Justice Programs.

  • $731,306 is being awarded to the University at Albany to support research in forensic science.
  • $885,000 is being awarded to the New York State Police to fund DNA programs to improve analysis and database capacity.
  • $1,049,243 is being awarded to New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services to improve forensic science and medical examiner services.

“Advancements in forensic science continue to provide new tools to improve our criminal justice system and make our communities a safer place,” Congressman Tonko said. “Investing in this field gives law enforcement more resources to solve crimes and ensure justice for victims and survivors. It is my honor to announce these well-deserved awards that will drive innovation in forensic science and DNA analysis. My sincere thanks to those whose ingenuity and dedication work to protect our Capital Region and all who call it home.”

The Office of Justice Programs provides federal leadership, grants, training, technical assistance and other resources to improve the nation’s capacity to prevent and reduce crime, assist victims and enhance the rule of law by strengthening the criminal and juvenile justice systems.
