Congressman Paul Tonko announced today that the federal government has awarded a grant of $17,100 to the Amsterdam Fire Department through the Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program. The grant will help the department improve safety for their first responders and enhance emergency services to residents.
“This Assistance to Firefighters Grant will be put to immediate use, helping Amsterdam improve emergency services for our residents and keep our first responders safe,” said Congressman Tonko. “In the midst of widening budget gaps at the local level, these funds are particularly crucial. These men and women risk their lives every day to keep us safe and deserve the best possible resources and equipment to make their jobs easier. Congratulations and continued thanks to the Amsterdam Fire Department for their noble efforts.”
"Thermal imaging cameras are a vital life saving tool,” said Amsterdam Fire Chief Richard Liberti. “The technology allows firefighters to see objects through dense smoke based on heat. If someone is trapped, a firefighter using this camera has the potential of rescuing a victim faster. The source of a fire can also be determined sooner, which limits property damage. The City of Amsterdam Fire Department thanks Congressman Tonko and the Department of Homeland Security for this lifesaving resource."
Here are the details on the award:
· Amsterdam Fire Department: $17,100, to purchase 2 new thermal imaging cameras. The cameras enable firefighters to see objects through dense smoke and heat.
The Assistance to Firefighters Grants program was created in 2001 to help firefighters and emergency medical organizations purchase critically needed equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training and other resources necessary to protect the public and first responders. It is administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Department of Homeland Security. The program requires that each department provide a match of between 5% to 10% of the total project cost.
