House Votes to Pass Tonko Limo Safety Measures in Major Infrastructure Package

Life-saving measures authored by NY Congressman alongside families of Schoharie & Long Island limo crash victims

  • Rep. Paul Tonko

WASHINGTON—The House of Representatives just voted to pass lifesaving limo safety measures authored and championed by Congressman Paul D. Tonko following the tragic 2018 Schoharie limo crash on that took the lives of 20 people.

“On Saturday, October 6, 2018, we lost 20 lives in the deadly Schoharie limo crash,” Congressman Tonko said. “For more than two years, I’ve been pushing for lifesaving, commonsense limousine safety measures to get unsafe limos off the road, raise the bar on limo safety nationwide and ensure no family has to suffer this kind of preventable tragedy ever again. Today is a great day for all who have worked to move these commonsense reforms forward, especially the incredible families of the Schoharie and Long Island limo crash victims who have worked tirelessly to help shape and advance this legislation, and I won’t stop pushing until we see it signed into law.”

Yesterday, Rep. Tonko spoke at a major auto safety press conference highlighting the advance of his limo safety provisions as part of the INVEST in America Act.

In 2019, Rep. Tonko introduced a comprehensive plan for national limousine safety reform, one year to the day after the tragic limousine crash in Schoharie, New York on October 6, 2018. Tonko has worked closely with families of these victims and as well as another group of families who lost loved ones in another limousine tragedy on Long Island. They introduced their resulting package of federal limousine safety reforms in Tonko’s hometown of Amsterdam, New York with Congressman Delgado (NY-19) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and with the support of Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) and Congresswoman Elise Stefanik (NY-21).
