Tonko Statement on 4 Years Since Schoharie Limo Crash

Marks yearslong effort alongside families to enact limo safety legislation & ongoing push for justice

AMSTERDAM, NY—Congressman Paul D. Tonko released a statement marking four years since the devastating Schoharie limo crash that took the lives of 20, many of whom lived in Tonko’s hometown of Amsterdam:

“Four years ago, our community gathered together to grieve the unfathomable loss of 20 souls, killed in the crash of a limousine that should never have been on the road. No one has carried the immense wounds of this tragedy more than the families of the victims. Yet, somehow, they turned the weight of their anguish into a relentless call for action.

“They became the guiding force in the development of lifesaving, commonsense legislation to improve limo safety standards nationwide and get unsafe limos off the road. Last year, those safety measures were signed into law—a resounding testament of the strength and commitment of these families.

“I am deeply humbled by the passage of our limo safety package. But our work is not over yet. We owe it to the families to seek justice and find the truth of that awful day. I am continuing to press the FBI for answers and will not stop until we have them. That is the very least that these families deserve.”
