WASHINGTON, DC—Congressman Paul D. Tonko cheered the advance of his bipartisan bill H.R. 6290, the Manufacturing.gov Act out of the House yesterday. The legislation would establish a one-stop hub to connect manufacturers with federal manufacturing programs.
“This year has been historic for American manufacturers, with promising growth in this vital industry spurred by strong federal investments that will continue to deliver positive results for our region and nation,” Congressman Tonko said. “I’m thrilled by the advance of the Manufacturing.gov Act that will build off of our CHIPS and Science Act by making federal programs and resources more accessible to manufacturers, giving them the tools they need to drive economic growth. I’ll continue pushing for key investments that strengthen American manufacturing and support our middle-class workers who power our nation’s industry.”
Tonko introduced the Manufacturing.gov Act last year alongside Representatives Fred Upton (MI-6), and Cindy Axne (IA-03). U.S. Senators Gary Peters (D-MI), Todd Young (R-IN) and Marco Rubio (R-FL) introduced the Senate bill, which was passed in October 2021. The bill addresses a Government Accountability Office report that found the federal government maintains 58 different manufacturing programs across 11 federal agencies—creating unnecessary hurdles and making it more difficult for manufacturers to access these programs.
In July 2022, Tonko cheered the advance of the CHIPS and Science Act, legislation that invests $52 billion in semiconductor chip manufacturing to strengthen domestic supply chains and lower costs for Americans, and also includes the Congressman’s bipartisan Microelectronics Research for Energy Innovation Act that empowers the Department of Energy to drive up research and development of microelectronics.
