Sunday, U.S. Congressman Paul Tonko will join with New York State Assemblymember Pat Fahy and unemployed constituents who recently lost their unemployment insurance to call on Congress to immediately extend the program, restoring a critical lifeline to those looking for work. They will highlight local, real-life effects of Congressional failure to extend the program on New Yorkers who have lost a job through no fault of their own.
The Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) program was enacted under President George W. Bush in 2008 to provide relief for long-term unemployed Americans.
Congressman Paul Tonko has called for an immediate extension of this critical lifeline and has worked with colleagues to pass legislation that would do so, but House Leadership continues to refuse to address the problem.
Assemblymember Fahy worked in the New York State Department of Labor from 2007 to 2012 after serving in the U.S. Department of Labor, the U.S. Senate HELP committee, and the U.S. House of Representatives Labor Subcommittee on Employment.
Other local constituents will also be present to share their personal stories.
