WASHINGTON, DC — U.S. Congressman Paul D. Tonko (D-NY) clarified his firm opposition to the Fiscal Year 2025 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) in the following statement:
“Last week, I mistakenly voted ‘YES’ for the Fiscal Year 2025 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).
The NDAA has historically served as a non-partisan bill to reinforce our commitment to our service members and protect our national security. Unfortunately, Republicans have turned what should be a bipartisan declaration of our freedoms into an attack against our transgender friends, family, and heroes.
My deep apologies to those in my community who have been hurt by my mistake. Please know that I fully intended to vote 'NO' for this cruel bill that perpetuates hate and denies health care to those who need it. I have documented that error with the Clerk and clarified my opposition to this bill.
Moving forward, I’ll continue to push for legislation that protects and uplifts, not attacks and debases our trans community.”
