WASHINGTON, DC — U.S. Congressman Paul D. Tonko (NY-20) today released a statement below marking four years since the violent attack by insurrectionists on the U.S. Capitol building:
“Four years ago today, as my colleagues and I gathered to fulfill our constitutional duty and certify the results of the 2020 presidential election, a violent mob descended on the U.S. Capitol. I’ll never forget watching with horror from the House gallery as rioters tried to break down the chamber doors, or the mayhem that unfolded as we ducked for cover and raced to evacuate the building.
“Several lost their lives as a result of that violence, and countless more were left with lasting physical and mental scars. Despite this terrible attack, democracy prevailed — thanks to the bravery of Capitol Police officers who sprang into action, defending me, my colleagues, and our republic that day.
“We must never forget the events of that day. We must continue to do all in our power to keep the light of democracy alive for the generations of Americans that follow us.”
