Congressman Paul Tonko (NY-20) released the following statement in response to today’s announcement from the White House that 5,500 American troops will remain in Afghanistan after 2016 – a reversal from previously stated plans to bring those forces home:
“The American people expected U.S. troops to return home from Afghanistan by the end of 2016, drawing down to an embassy-only presence and ending the longest war our nation has known. Today’s announcement confirms that will not happen, and I am disappointed. It is past time for Afghanistan’s leaders to be in charge of their own security and their own country. We have far too many challenges within our own borders to continue to spend lives, money and manpower overseas,” said Tonko.
