Congressman Paul Tonko released the following statement in solidarity with Verizon employees demanding a stable and fair contract. Approximately 800 workers in the Capital Region joined 39,000 Communications Workers of America (CWA) and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) strikers nationwide.
βIt is energizing to see so many employees in the labor movement standing up for their rights in the workplace. Verizon is an extremely successful and profitable company due in large part to the hard work of their employees, and they deserve good paying jobs. I stand with the workers and ask that Verizon negotiate in good faith with CWA and IBEW. Verizon has made investments in building out their infrastructure in the United States, and I hope that continues to grow, especially in low income and rural communities β which will benefit families, small businesses, workers as well as their bottom line,β said Tonko.
