Rep. Paul Tonko made the following statement on the groundbreaking this morning for the new GlobalFoundries plant in Malta:

“Today the promise of a vision to build a better economic future for our region and attract a facility that would make us a leader in a high-tech economy has come to fruition. We have broken ground on a facility that will create thousands of jobs and has the potential to attract thousands more jobs to our region.

The GlobalFoundries Plant in Malta is a prime example of how the public sector can partner with private industry to drive a better economic outcome. It’s proof that the effort to take advantage of our academic resources and make smart investments towards a regional agenda of high tech development is working. From the GlobalFoundries plant to the nanotechnology facilities in Albany to the GE Advanced Battery Plant that will soon be built, we are attracting worldwide attention as a center of high tech and alternative energy development.

I applaud the work of our state and local leaders who came together to make this facility a reality. JFK challenged America more than 40 years ago to use ideas and innovation to win the race to the moon. We face a similar challenge today to create an innovation economy and pioneer the development of technologies that will solve our most pressing problems. As a region, we are poised to lead the world in the high-tech revolution and that has the potential to create a more secure future for our country and our children.”\
