Tonko Slams Senate Trumpcare Bill

Secretive new draft remarkably similar to unpopular House bill

"I want to help this President keep his healthcare promises to the American people. If he is willing to stand by his word, scrap this heartless and damaging plan, and come to the table to work with Members of Congress from both parties in good faith, I believe we can chart a path forward that drives down costs and increases healthcare coverage and access for every American." - Rep. Paul Tonko

WASHINGTON – After seven weeks of secret deals and public silence, Republicans in the Senate revealed a Trumpcare bill this morning. Rep. Paul Tonko (D-NY) released the following statement:

Do not be fooled – the Senate Trumpcare bill is just as harmful to American families as the Republican healthcare bill that was rammed through the House last month. It would deny care to millions of America’s seniors, veterans, women, those approaching retirement, expectant and new mothers, the disabled, those suffering from addiction or mental health disorders, and the poorest and most vulnerable members of our communities.

President Trump promised repeatedly that no one would lose coverage under his plan. Tens of millions are expected to lose coverage under this Trumpcare bill. The President promised that there would be no cuts to Medicaid. This plan tears into Medicaid in what will amount to the biggest social safety net cut in American history. And he promised that healthcare would be available and a lot cheaper for everyone. This bill will lead to historic drops in coverage and major increases in premiums for those who can least afford them.

Americans all over this country are desperately trying to be heard on Trumpcare, with just 17 percent supporting the House version. I want to help this President keep his healthcare promises to the American people. If he is willing to stand by his word, scrap this heartless and damaging plan, and come to the table to work with Members of Congress from both parties in good faith, I believe we can chart a path forward that drives down costs and increases healthcare coverage and access for every American.
