WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Paul Tonko (D-NY) announced the official start of the 2017 Congressional App Challenge (CAC) for the 20th Congressional District, a competition for students in New York’s Capital Region to create and develop their own computer or mobile app. The competition runs until 12:00 PM (noon) on November1, 2017 and is open to primary and secondary school students of all skill levels and backgrounds within New York’s 20th Congressional District.

Tonko celebrated the launch, saying “This competitionwill give our Capital Region students an exciting opportunity to showcase their creativity and develop valuable, technical skills that will empower them to pursue STEM careers and opportunities. No matter their level of coding or computer science experience, I want to encourage all of our students throughout the region to give this app challenge a try and begin to develop powerful, 21st century skills in the process.”
The Congressional App Challenge is designed to encourage students to develop skills in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). The challenge provides a number of resources that help students learn how to code. Parent and teachers who would like to receive updates on the CAC can sign up here. Interested students can compete as individuals or in teams of up to four. A complete submission will include a registration form, details about the app, and a video demonstrating the app and how it works. Students can submit their completed projects here. Winners will be announced after November 1st.
