Rep. Paul Tonko (D-Amsterdam) today urged low income tax filers to use the IRS’s free Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program to save the cost of tax preparation and to make sure they are taking advantage of all tax credits, including the Earned Income Credit. A list of the VITA sites from throughout the 21st Congressional District is posted on Rep. Tonko’s web site, /2009/03/list-of-sites-in-the-21st-district-for-the-irs.shtml
“As we weather these tough economic times, it’s important that people who need help the most are able to get it,” said Rep. Tonko. That is why we’ve posted this list on our website – so working families who are struggling to make ends meet can save their hard earned dollars and utilize programs that could reduce their tax bill.”
The VITA Program offers free tax help to people who generally make $42,000 or less who cannot prepare their own tax returns. Certified volunteers sponsored by various organizations, receive training to help prepare basic tax returns. The program is sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service.
