Residents of Schoharie County had a chance to meet with U.S. Rep. Paul Tonko Thursday afternoon, who held a "Congress on your Corner" event at the Community Library in Cobleskill. Rep. Tonko spent over an hour answering questions from a crowd of more than 50 people, on topics as diverse as the recently enacted economic recovery package, the war in Iraq, and the current crisis hitting dairy farmers who have seen wholesale prices of milk drop while their costs continue to rise.
"I want to thank all the people who came out to see me today, whether looking for help or just to express their opinion," said Rep. Tonko. "We had a nice cross-section of people who came out to the meeting. This is such a vibrant community, and I've always enjoyed spending time with people here going back to when I represented this area in the New York State Assembly. Our country is dealing with a deepening economic crisis, and it's important to me that I am accessible to the people here and across the district to hear their ideas and concerns."
Joining constituents at the meeting were several non-profit groups, along with elected officials from across the county and representatives from the Schoharie County Chamber of Commerce, the State Farm Bureau, SUNY Cobleskill, and Cobleskill Regional Hospital.
"I appreciate the Community Library for hosting the event and I'm looking forward to returning in the future," added Rep. Tonko, who will be making frequent trips to Schoharie County and the other communities throughout the district. On Tuesday, Rep. Tonko met with constituents at the Rensselaer County Office Building in Troy.
