WASHINGTON, DC—Congressman Paul D. Tonko cheered the announcement today that Social Security benefits will receive an increase of 5.9 percent for 64 million Social Security beneficiaries and 8 million Supplemental Security Income beneficiaries in 2022. This cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) is the largest seen in 39 years.
“Social Security serves as a lifeline for millions of seniors. Those benefits are more critical than ever, as this pandemic has caused spikes in the price of groceries, gas and other goods that countless Americans depend on,” Congressman Tonko said. “This boost in Social Security is an assurance that hardworking Americans can retire with the dignity they deserve. In Congress, I will continue the push to advance legislation that would increase benefits for current recipients while strengthening Social Security for future generations.”
As a tireless advocate for seniors in Congress, Tonko has repeatedly worked to strengthen Social Security and add decades to the program’s solvency. This includes his support of the Build back Better Act, which benefits seniors by expanding Medicare to include dental, vision and hearing, empowering Medicare to negotiate lower prescription drug prices, and allocating hundreds of billions of dollars to long-term care for seniors and people with disabilities in need of daily assistance.
