WASHINGTON, DC — Electrification Caucus Co-Chair Congressman Paul D. Tonko cheered the recent announcement from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) that it is opening applications for two Home Energy Rebate programs to states and territories. Tonko spearheaded the push to implement these rebate programs, which were created under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and which will lower costs for families, increase energy efficiency, and help meet the Biden Administration’s clean energy and climate goals.
“For too long, rising energy costs have strained Americans’ pocketbooks,” Congressman Tonko said. “I’ve worked for years to ease this burden with commonsense investments and was proud to include a number of key provisions through legislation including the landmark Inflation Reduction Act. While I will continue working to electrify our communities and make our homes healthier, more efficient, and more affordable, this announcement is a powerful step towards a cleaner, brighter future. I encourage states to use this opportunity to ensure Americans across the country are able to take advantage of these incentives.”
For states and territories looking to apply, the Administrative and Legal Requirements Document (ALRD) offers full federal guidance and instructions for allocation of the two Home Energy Rebates Programs. Consumers will be able to access this funding only after states apply for and receive funds from DOE and launch their state rebate program.
IRA authorized $8.8 billion total for the two Home Energy Rebate Programs, named the Home Efficiency Rebate and Home Electrification and Appliance Rebate Programs. The DOE estimates that these rebate programs will save households up to $1 billion annually.
