WASHINGTON, DC — Congressman Paul D. Tonko released the below statement following his ‘Yes’ vote on “Declaring the office of Speaker of the House of Representatives to be vacant.”
"House Republican leadership has repeatedly chosen to cave to extremist demands for draconian cuts to essential programs and the curtailing of basic freedoms rather than make any effort to reach across the aisle to solve the real problems facing everyday Americans.
"From the debt ceiling agreement, to keeping the doors of government open, Democrats have shown in our words and in our votes that we are willing to find common ground and reach across the aisle. Time and time again, through infighting, letting chaos lead the caucus, and reneging on these same bipartisan agreements, House Republicans have failed to show any willingness to do the same.
"I always strive — as I have done throughout my time in Congress — to meet the needs of our Capital Region communities. That solemn obligation is why I voted yes on this motion to vacate.
"Regardless of who wields the gavel, Democrats remain committed to doing the work of the people and supporting our communities."
