WASHINGTON, DC—Congressman Paul D. Tonko (NY-20) announced today that he has been newly selected to serve on the House Committee on the Budget. The committee plays a key role in determining the federal budget and outlining federal spending priorities.

“I’m honored that my Democratic colleagues have selected me to serve on the House Budget Committee,” Congressman Tonko said. “While I’m ready and willing to find bipartisan solutions that support our communities, I also promise to push back against GOP attempts to strip away essential programs on which families depend. I have no illusions about the challenges ahead. President Trump and Republicans are preparing a slate of proposals that slash Medicare, gut Social Security, and claw back climate actions — all while lining the pockets of their billionaire backers. I stand ready to combat these painful cuts and work to advance a budget that reflects the values and needs of American families.”

At the forefront of the proposed Republican cuts are efforts to claw back laws including the Inflation Reduction Act and other key climate provisions, as well as critical health care programs. Serving on the Budget Committee and as Ranking Member of the House Subcommittee on the Environment, Tonko will play a key role in protecting the environment, defending science, and strengthening public health.
