Tonko Introducing Bill to Spark U.S. Clean Energy Manufacturing

Manufacturing for Our Future Act will create incentives for domestic clean energy manufacturing, innovation and job creation

  • Rep. Paul Tonko

AMSTERDAM, NY—Congressman Paul D. Tonko, Chair of the Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Environment and Climate Change, announced that he will introduce new legislation today—the Manufacturing for Our Future Act—to bolster U.S. job growth and drive clean energy innovation through federal incentives for domestic manufacturing of clean energy systems such as wind and solar power or electric vehicles and related infrastructure.

“Confronting the growing threat of climate change will require a full-spectrum deployment of clean energy technologies across our nation,” Congressman Tonko said. “This urgent push to address the climate crisis and restore America’s clean energy leadership also presents an exciting opportunity to get back to ‘Made In America’ manufacturing. My Manufacturing for Our Future Act will help spark the next stage of America’s clean energy revolution, creating good jobs in communities all over America that pay well while also securing domestic supply chains that are vital to our economy and national security. I am proud to introduce this forward-thinking legislation that delivers the bold climate action America needs now.”

The Manufacturing for Our Future Act:

  • Bolsters the nation’s ability to domestically supply these technologies and advances U.S. leadership in emerging clean energy industries by:
  • Providing 50/50 cost share grants to re-equip, expand, or establish facilities to manufacture clean energy systems.
  • Extending eligibility to support the decarbonization of existing facilities that manufacture energy-intensive products, including steel and cement.
  • Supporting projects in localities with historically fossil-based economies by providing up to an 80% federally funded cost share.
  • Prioritizing projects that maximize job creation, pollution reduction, innovation, and strengthen domestic supply chains.
  • Authorizing $10 billion to remain available until expended.
